Nami Island

Bukhangang Bike Path

Nami Island (남이섬; map; Namiseom), located in the North Han River near Chuncheon City (춘천시; map), is a crescent-shaped island. Originally a landform connected to the mainland, it became an island following the construction of the Cheongpyeong Dam in 1944, which elevated the river’s water level.

Today, Nami Island spans 46 hectares and is renowned for its tranquil scenery, seasonal beauty, and as the iconic filming location for the popular Korean drama Winter Sonata (겨울연가), a 2002 K-drama that filmed on the island.

Also known as the “Naminara Republic,” Nami Island is privately managed and a self-proclaimed “cultural micro-nation” with an “immigration process” that allows guests to feel as though they are entering a different world.

Attractions

Nami Island features tree-lined avenues, open meadows, and riverside trails. Its famous Metasequoia Lane offers a shaded pathway under Metasequoia trees for leisurely strolls and photography. Seasonal highlights include cherry blossoms in spring, dense greenery during summer, vivid autumn foliage, and a snowy wonderland in winter.

The island’s gardens and parks provide ample space for relaxation and exploration. Wooden bridges spanning tranquil waters add a rustic charm, while open fields invite picnics or quiet moments of reflection. Wildlife such as peacocks, squirrels, and rabbits roam freely.
