Cheonjiyeon Falls

Cheonjiyeon Falls (천지연폭포; map) is one of Jeju Island’s most celebrated natural landmarks, located in the heart of Seogwipo on the south side of Jeju Island.

With a name “Cheonjiyeon” translating to “Pond of Heaven and Earth,” the 22-meter waterfall cascades into a deep, clear pool with surrounding subtropical vegetation, basalt cliffs, and tranquil ambiance.

Journey to the Falls

The journey to Cheonjiyeon Falls begins on a well-maintained pathway extending 750 meters from the parking lot to the waterfall. This path, paved with Jeju’s iconic basalt stones, meanders through a diverse subtropical forest. Informative signposts along the way introduce visitors to the unique flora of the region, such as the damifara tree, whose northernmost natural habitat is in this area.

The path is designed to accommodate visitors of all ages and abilities, with wheelchair- and stroller-friendly sections ensuring accessibility. As visitors stroll through the shaded trail, they encounter small bridges and stepping stones over the Yeonwoe Stream.

Heritage

Cheonjiyeon Falls is surrounded by a forest filled with evergreen and subtropical plants, including camellia trees and Japanese torreya. This unique environment has earned the site the designation of Natural Monument No. 379.

The pool at the base of the falls is home to the giant mottled eel, a migratory species protected as Natural Monument No. 27. These eels travel thousands of kilometers between freshwater and marine environments to spawn. Although the eels are elusive during the day, their presence highlights the importance of conserving this delicate habitat.

Day and Night Visits

Cheonjiyeon Falls offers two distinct experiences depending on the time of day.

  • During daylight hours, the falls are bathed in natural light, illuminating the vibrant green foliage and the glistening spray of the cascading water. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil beauty of the site and its natural surroundings.
  • At night, the falls and the surrounding path are illuminated with soft, strategically placed lighting. The sound of the water cascading into the deep, crystal-clear pool becomes more pronounced, offering a calming sensory experience.

Cheonjiyeon Falls remains open until 10 PM, making it a popular nighttime attraction for couples, families, and solo travelers alike.
