Suok Falls
Just south of Sojo Pass pours Suok Falls (수옥폭포; map) in Goesan County. This 20-meter tall waterfall comprises three stages. The second and third form ancient divots on their stony landing.
Suok Pavilion (수옥정; map) overlooks the waterfall from on top of a boulder nearby. The governor of Hyeonpung County built the resting pavilion in 1711 to commemorate his uncle, who ascended to the level of Jwauijeong (좌의정), a high ranking position in the Joseon Dynasty (1392~1897; 대조선국).
Mountain streams pouring from Woraksan National Park (월악산국립공원; map) lead to a reservoir above the waterfall (map). While once a naturally occurring waterfall, today a feeder stream slips from the reservoir and powers Suok Falls.
Tourists can visit Suok Falls by trekking from a nearby parking lot, surrounded by restaurants and cafes, down a 300-meter dirt trail to the base of the waterfall.
