Songak Mountain
Songak Mountain (송악산; map; Songaksan), located in the southwestern corner of Jeju Island, offers stunning views of Jeju’s southern coast. This volcanic cone features a unique double crater formation and a well-maintained coastal trail. From its vantage points, hikers can see nearby islands, including Hyeongje Islet (형제섬; map), Gapa Island (가파도; map; Gapado), and Mara Island (마라도; map; Marado)—Korea’s southernmost island.
The Songaksan Certification Center (송악산 인증센터; map) is conveniently located nearby, making it a popular stop for cyclists on the Jeju Fantasy Bike Path.
The Landscape
Songak Mountain is a classic example of Jeju’s volcanic origins. It features two craters—a larger outer crater and a smaller inner crater formed by subsequent eruptions. Erosion has exposed the volcanic strata, making it a significant site for geological studies.
The mountain rises to a modest 104 meters, and the surrounding area boasts expansive views of the sea and dramatic coastal cliffs. A loop trail of approximately 2.8 kilometers takes visitors around the mountain, offering views of nearby islands and the open sea.
Hyeongje Islet
Hyeongje Islet (형제섬; map; Hyeongjeseom), or the “Brother Islands,” consists of two uninhabited islands visible from Songak Mountain’s trail. The larger island, Bonseom, features a small sandy plain, while the smaller, Otseom, boasts striking columnar joints. These formations create a dramatic seascape, particularly during sunrise and sunset.
Depending on the tide, additional rocks and small islands appear, giving the impression of multiple islands. The area is also popular for fishing and diving, with underwater natural arches and marine life such as white corals and damselfish adding to its allure.
Historical Significance
During the Japanese occupation, Songak Mountain’s coastal cliffs were used as a military outpost. Japanese forces built over 15 coastal tunnels here, intending to use them as bases for kamikaze attacks. While access to these tunnels is now restricted due to safety concerns, their entrances can still be seen along the trail.
Nearby, visitors can find Altteureu Airfield, another remnant of the occupation. Built by forced labor, the airfield’s hangars and structures remain as a stark reminder of Jeju’s past.
Hiking the Trail
The Songak Mountain loop trail is relatively easy and accessible for visitors of all ages. The path is primarily wooden decking and offers panoramic views throughout. Points of interest along the trail include:
- Hyeongje Islet (형제섬): The “Brother Islands” can be seen offshore, with their columnar joints and unique formations.
- Coastal Cliffs: The trail winds along cliffs that provide uninterrupted views of the ocean and distant islands.
- Volcanic Features: The trail showcases the double crater’s structure, along with exposed layers of volcanic rock.
- Flora and Fauna: The trail is lined with Jeju’s iconic grasses and coastal vegetation. Visitors may encounter free-roaming horses, which graze in the area.
For those looking for a shorter visit, a viewpoint near the parking lot provides excellent vistas without requiring a full hike.
