Damyang Dam & Damyang Lake
Damyang Dam and Damyang Lake were formed in 1973 and 1976 as part of a large-scale agricultural development project. Damyang Dam now serves as a critical resource for irrigation, flood control, and drinking water.
The dam’s creation also gave rise to Damyang Lake, a reservoir surrounded by forested hills and scenic trails. It is renowned for its tranquil waters, walking paths, and cultural attractions like Chuwol Mountain and Boriam Hermitage.
Let’s learn more.
Damyang Dam
Damyang Dam (담양댐; map) is a multi-purpose dam located in Damyang County, South Jeolla Province. Built between 1973 and 1976 as part of the first phase of the Yeongsan River Basin Agricultural Development Project, its height of 46 meters and a length of 306 meters makes it the tallest of the four dams constructed during this initiative.
The dam supports the region’s agriculture by providing consistent irrigation to over 6,000 hectares of farmland, ensuring water security during droughts, and controlling seasonal flooding. It marks the starting point of the Yeongsangang Bike Path, connecting cyclists to the broader network of the river’s landscapes.
Construction
Damyang Dam, completed in 1976, is a core impervious fill dam engineered to manage water resources in the Yeongsan River Basin by preventing seepage and upstream and downstream slopes.
The reservoir created by the dam has a capacity of 66.7 million cubic meters. It provides irrigation to over 6,245 hectares of farmland, enabling consistent agricultural productivity even during dry seasons. The reservoir also supplies drinking water to towns such as Damyang.
Flood management is a key function of Damyang Dam. Its 50-meter-long spillway handles a maximum flood discharge of 546 cubic meters per second. This reduces the risk of downstream flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
Damyang Dam Certification Center
At the base of the dam, near Daeseong Bridge, lies the Damyang Dam Certification Center (담양댐 인증센터; map). It serves as the starting point of the Yeongsangang Bike Path, which stretches 133 kilometers to Mokpo City along the coast.
Cyclists visiting the center can stamp their Bike Passports and begin their journey along the riverbanks. The site also marks the confluence of the Yeongsan River’s headwaters.
Damyang Lake
Damyang Lake (담양호; map), a reservoir formed by the construction of Damyang Dam, spans an area of 4.1 square kilometers. Surrounded by lush forested hills and set against the backdrop of Chuwol Mountain, the lake is both a functional water resource and a recreation area. Its waters attract visitors seeking outdoor recreation, quiet contemplation, and a connection with nature.
