Yong Du Am Rock

Yong Du Am Rock (용두암; map) stands as one of Jeju Island’s iconic landmarks. Situated on the northeastern coast near Jeju International Airport, it’s a convenient stop for visitors beginning or concluding their Jeju journey. The rock formation’s name translates to “Dragon Head Rock,” inspired by its striking resemblance to a dragon rising from the sea.

Formed approximately 50 to 60 million years ago, the rock is composed of basalt shaped by volcanic activity and subsequent coastal erosion. It rises about 10 meters above the sea, with an estimated 30 meters submerged underwater.

Legends of Yong Du Am

Local folklore attributes the formation of Yong Du Am to a dragon’s failed ascent to the heavens. One version recounts an imugi (a serpent-like creature aspiring to become a dragon) stealing a precious jade from Mount Hallasan’s spirit. As the imugi attempted to ascend, it was struck by the spirit’s arrow and fell into the sea, where its head solidified into the rock visible today.

Another tale describes a dragon’s servant collecting medicinal herbs on Mount Hallasan. Struck by an arrow, the dragon fell to the coast, leaving only its head above water.

Geology

Yong Du Am is a significant example of Jeju’s volcanic landscape. The rock’s jagged appearance is the result of “aa lava” flows, characterized by their rough and fragmented surfaces. Geological studies show that the upper and lower layers of these lava flows contain thick clinker zones, with Yong Du Am protruding where lava broke through these layers.

Visiting Yong Du Am

The rock is best viewed from approximately 100 meters to the west, especially on days when the waves crash vigorously against the formation. The dramatic setting, enhanced by turbulent seas, evokes a sense of mythical grandeur. A calm sea, however, reveals more intricate details of the rock’s form.

A paved walking trail runs along the coast, allowing visitors to enjoy the surrounding scenery. Nearby, Yong Du Am Certification Center (용두암 인증센터; map) marks the starting and ending point of the Jeju Fantasy Bike Path, making it a significant location for cyclists.

Additional Attractions

Close to Yong Du Am is Yongyeon Pond (용연계곡; map) and its suspension bridge. Historically, local officials and exiled scholars held moonlit boat parties here. Today, the bridge provides sweeping views of the area. Visitors can easily pair Yong Du Am with a walk to Yongyeon for a more extensive exploration.

The coastal road between Yong Du Am and Doduhang Port offers additional sights, including cafes and seafood restaurants, providing an opportunity for scenic drives or bike rides.

Tips for Visitors

  • Visit during early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds and softer lighting for photography.
  • Pair your visit with a stroll to Yongyeon Pond or a drive along the coastal road for a richer experience.
  • Be cautious near the water as the rocks can be slippery and the waves unpredictable.
