Jocheon Lotus Park
Jocheon (Jo Stream) Lotus Park (조천연꽃공원; map) is an ecological park located in Jochiwon Town, Sejong City (세종시; map). Spanning approximately 25,000 m², the park sits near where the Jo Stream (조천; map; Jocheon) flows into the larger Miho Stream. A sanctuary for lotus flowers, the park is a popular destination for locals and visitors.
Recognized as one of the “100 Beautiful River Trails in Korea” by the Ministry of Land, the park offers a tranquil retreat in all seasons.
History
The name “Jocheon” originates from “Saenae,” which means “new stream.”
The Jo Stream flows from Deolgol Valley through Jochiwon Town (조치원읍; map), which once belonged to the defunct Yeongi County before Sejong City incorporated it. The Jo stream spills into the Miho Stream near where it meets the Geum River.
The area surrounding Jo Stream was once used as farmland but was transformed into a public space as part of an ecological restoration initiative.
Lotus Flowers in Korean Culture
In Korean culture, the lotus flower, known as “yeonkkot” (연꽃), symbolizes purity, enlightenment, and rebirth. Deeply rooted in Buddhist philosophy, the lotus rises unblemished from muddy waters, embodying the ability to transcend adversity and achieve spiritual awakening.
This symbolism is prevalent in Korean art, architecture, and festivals, reflecting the flower’s esteemed status as an emblem of resilience and inner beauty.
Jocheon Lotus Park celebrates this heritage by hosting seasonal events, including the Jocheon Lotus Festival, which features cultural performances and educational programs about the ecology and uses of lotus plants.
