Sanmaki Old Trail

Ocheon Bike Path

Sanmaki Old Trail (산막이옛길; map) is a picturesque 4-kilometer trail in Goesan County, North Chungcheong Province.

This revitalized historical path, once an isolated route connecting mountain villages, now offers stunning views of Goesan Lake and the surrounding natural landscape.

Popular among hikers and nature lovers, it combines scenic beauty with cultural and historical significance.

History

The Sanmaki Old Trail originally served as a crucial link between Sao-rang Village and Sanmaki Village, an isolated community nestled deep within the mountainous terrain of North Chungcheong Province.

The name “Sanmaki” derives from the Korean words for “mountains block the way,” a fitting description for the village’s remote and secluded location.

Before modern infrastructure, villagers relied on this narrow path to transport harvested mushrooms, wild herbs, medicinal plants, and other agricultural produce across the Dal Stream to nearby markets. This trail was not just a route for trade but connected the community to the outside world.

The construction of Goesan Dam (map) in 1957 brought hydroelectric power and flood control, but it also submerged vast stretches of the surrounding landscape, including parts of the original trail, creating what is now Goesan Lake (괴산호; map). This further isolated Sanmaki Village, cutting off its already limited access to neighboring areas.

In response, the trail was restored into today’s Sanmaki Old Trail. It retains much of its historical essence while offering a safer and more accessible experience for visitors.

The use of environmentally friendly decking and pathways reflects a commitment to preserving the area’s natural beauty and historical significance.

By walking this path, visitors can retrace the steps of past generations, gaining a deeper appreciation for the resilience and resourcefulness of the people.
