Korea by Bike focuses on pathed trails. But South Korea is filled with mountains and mountain biking courses. Here is a brief list of courses you can find amidst the nation’s rocky peaks.

Gangwon Province (강원도)
- Jinbur Pass Maja Market to Sogangr Pass (고성 진부령 마장터 ~ 소간령; map): The Jinbur Pass to Sogangr Pass trail in Goseong spans 14.8 kilometers. It is part of the Baekdudaegan mountain range, a historic and naturally beautiful route. While traditionally known as a hiking path, its varied terrain and scenic beauty also make it suitable for mountain biking. This trail offers cyclists an opportunity to experience the unique landscapes of Gangwon Province, from Jinbur Pass through Masan Peak and Daegangn Pass to Maja Market and finally Sogangr Pass, presenting a challenging yet rewarding ride through Korea’s natural heritage.
- Samcheok Sagum Mountain (삼척 사금산; map): Samcheok’s Sagum Mountain trail offers mountain bikers a chance to journey through the remnants of old Hwajeonmin villages. The trail, boasting an impressive length of nearly 200 kilometers, meanders through diverse landscapes, including forest paths, valleys, and areas where one can catch glimpses of the East Sea. The highlight of the Sagum Mountain course is the exhilarating downhill section towards Hamaeup-ri, offering mountain bikers the thrill of speed and a dynamic ride amidst stunning natural surroundings.
- Yangyang Manwol Mountain, Samhyeongje Peak, Cheolgap Pass (양양 만월산; map – 삼형제봉; map – 철갑령; map): The mountain biking trail encompassing Yangyang’s Manwol Mountain, Samhyeongje Peak, and Cheolgap Pass. It ranked 38th among the 56 recommended mountain trails. This trail, which was meticulously planned and split into a three-day journey covering 100 kilometers of forest road, blends strenuous physical challenge with the serene beauty of Gangwon Province. Riders on this trail are treated to diverse landscapes, historical paths, and the satisfaction of conquering one of the most rewarding and scenic mountain biking routes in Korea.
- Inje Jeom Peak Mountain (인제 점봉산; map): The Inje Jeom Peak Mountain trail is a challenging experience for cycling enthusiasts. Starting from Michyeongol, this 90 km route winds clockwise, crossing Jocheongn Pass and several small passes, culminating in the ascent of Sogeumgangsan’s Hanbokn Pass. Although primarily a road course, the ride is demanding, especially on hot days. The Hanbokn Pass rest area has stunning views. This trail, taking about nine hours to complete, is a test of endurance and will, set against the backdrop of Inje’s picturesque landscapes and the challenging terrain of Jeom Peak Mountain.
- Yeongwol Duiw Peak (영월 두위봉; map): The Yeongwol Duiw Peak mountain biking trail, set in the breathtaking landscapes of Yeongwol County, stretches over 33.7 km. It takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, excluding rest times. The trail begins at Jungdong-myeon in Yeongwol County and winds through the scenic Duiw Peak, known for its lush natural beauty and serene environment. The course presents a mix of challenging climbs and exhilarating downhills, making it a perfect blend of adventure and scenic tranquility. With various segments offering different levels of difficulty and landscapes, the trail is a haven for mountain bikers looking for both a physical challenge and a chance to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Korean countryside.
Gyeonggi Province (경기도)
- Gapyeong Yeonin Mountain (가평 연인산; map): Gapyeong’s Yeonin Mountain, standing at 1,068 meters, offers a challenging mountain biking experience, known for its tough trails and natural beauty. The course starts with a climb along the scenic Yongchu Valley, transitioning into rugged terrain with steep inclines and rocky paths, demanding energy management. However, the refreshing waterways along the route provide a relief from the demanding ride. The trail’s highlight includes a thrilling downhill section near Jangsu Pass, leading to the Kyungban Valley and Kalbong Mountain Natural Recreation Forest. Although challenging, the course offers a unique blend of adventure and natural scenery, especially recommended during May when the azaleas bloom. The 40km course usually takes around 3 hours on an electric mountain bike. Bring water and snacks.
- Gapyeong Myeongji Mountain Ottugi Ryeong (가평 명지산 오뚜기령; map): The Myeongji Mountain and Ottugi Ryeong mountain biking course in Gapyeong is a challenging and exhilarating ride, known for its technical difficulty and scenic beauty. Starting from Gapyeong Station, the course weaves through the rugged terrain. It features a plethora of rocks that demand concentration and skill, especially on the downhill sections. Riders are advised to maintain a steady speed and avoid sudden braking for safety. The route also offers views of streams and a lush environment. The trail, while physically demanding, rewards with stunning views at Ottugi Ryeong’s summit. This course is recommended for those with good fitness and technical biking skills, promising an unforgettable day of adventure and natural beauty in Gapyeong.
- Gapyeong Hwaya Mountain (가평 화야산; map): Gapyeong’s Hwaya Mountain, nestled between Yangpyeong County and Gapyeong County, features an isolated mountain biking trail. The journey often starts near Elim Farm, beyond the Sincheongpyeong Bridge. Journey through various elevations, climbing 420 meters, then descending 350 meters, and before summiting a 450-meter peak. Continue downhill for 5 kilometers towards Seorak Recreation Forest, passing through Angol Pass. The final segment is a challenging 10-kilometer uphill ride on a steep road to a rest area. This tranquil 35-kilometer ride takes about 3 hours to complete.
- Ganghwa Goryeo Mountain, Guksu Mountain, Hyeolgu Mountain (강화 고려산; map – 국수산; map – 혈구산; map): The mountain biking trail at Ganghwa Goryeo Mountain offers a unique blend of historical and natural beauty. The route starts at the Ganghwa Goinindol parking lot and takes riders uphill towards Nakjo Peak and Guksu Mountain. Covering approximately 40 kilometers, this trail is suitable for experienced bikers. The route features excellent views, including glimpses of the Kimpo Plains and the West Sea. However, certain sections are challenging and may require carrying the bike. The terrain changes from paved roads to rugged mountain paths, providing a diverse biking experience. This trail is recommended for those seeking a thrilling ride.
- Gunpo Suri Mountain (군포 수리산; map): Gunpo Suri Mountain, known for its vibrant forest roads, presents a compelling mountain biking experience. The journey begins at the Galchi Reservoir parking area. It tracks forest roads to a thrilling descent on the “Odeng Course.” The trail features weathered paths with exposed roots and rocks. Suitable for intermediate riders, the trail offers a blend of scenic beauty and adventurous terrain.
Gyeongsang Province (경상도)
- Geoje Gyeryong Mountain (거제 계룡산; map): Geoje’s Gyeryong Mountain, standing at 570 meters, is known as the guardian mountain of Geoje Island. It is celebrated for its unique resemblance to a dragon with a rooster’s comb, an imagery vividly brought to life by its long, rocky ridges. The mountain historically shielded the Gyeongju government office and now grandly oversees the southern part of Geoje city, dividing the expansive plains of Geoje-myeon and the densely populated city areas. The mountain’s trails, once strategic paths during the Korean War, now offer exhilarating hiking and mountain biking experiences, combining historical exploration with outdoor adventure. The climactic ascent to its peak, on a visually stunning trail culminates in breathtaking views of the entire Geoje region.
- Bonghwa Ilwol Mountain, Janggun Peak (봉화 일월산; map – 장군봉; map): The mountain biking journey across Bonghwa’s Ilwol Mountain and Janggun Peak Begins with a serene 45 kilometer ride along an easy trail through Ilwol Mountain. The picturesque clockwise route is marked by ancient pine forests and clean air. The second course climbs Janggun Peak over 55 kilometers. It takes 7 hours to navigate through moderate to easy trails. The journey, set against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes, includes navigating fallen trees and a challenging 300-meter section requiring carrying the bike.
- Yeongdeok Myeongdong Mountain (지품 명동산; map): Yeongdeok’s Myeongdong Mountain (also known as Jipum), has an altitude of 812 meters. It is a prominent mountain located at the southeastern edge of Yeongyang County, North Gyeongsang Province. It connects with the Baekam Mountain in Uljin County and stretches towards Juwang Mountain in Cheongsong County. Historically, the slopes of Myeongdong Mountain were abundant with trees that facilitated paper production in the area. Today, the region is known for collecting maple sap and highland vegetable farming. The Jipum mountain biking trail, spanning 53 km, presents a challenging yet rewarding experience. It is marked by steep climbs and breathtaking scenery, especially near the Yeongyang Wind Power Plant. Despite the demanding nature of the trail, with some overgrown sections, the journey offers an exceptional view of the area’s mountains and valleys.
- Yeongyang Baegam Mountain (영양 백암산; map): Baegam Mountain in Yeongyang is renowned for its scenery and easy trails. The course is an ideal destination for beginner mountain bikers. It offers a tranquil and enjoyable ride alongside a meandering stream. The paths are well-maintained, with ample shade, making it especially appealing during the fall foliage season.
- Yeongju Gochir Pass to Magur Pass (영주 고치령 ~ 마구령; map): The Gochir Pass to Magur Pass mountain biking course in Yeongju offers an exhilarating 49-kilometer ride through dense forests. The journey takes approximately 6 hours including breaks. Starting at the town hall in Uipung Village, Danjang County, the trail guides bikers along a path nearby streams and bird hideouts. The route, historically used by merchants and their horses, leads to the first peak, Magur Pass, and then to the second and more challenging peak, Gochir Pass, providing both uphill and downhill experiences. As you navigate the course, you will encounter varied terrains and elevations. The course circles back to the starting point.
Jeolla Province (전라도)
- Gangjin Cheontae Mountain (강진 천태산; map): The Gangjin Cheontae Mountain Trail, part of the “Cloud Mountain Path,” in Jeollanam Province, offers a captivating 39.8 kilometer (22.5 km unpaved) ride that takes around 4 hours and 30 minutes. Starting from Cheongwansan Literary Museum, this route traverses the Cheongwan and Cheontae Mountains. The journey passes through diverse landscapes, including deep forests, challenging mountain passes like Gipeunjae and Golchijae, and serene temple sites like Jeongsusa. You will also experience a mix of forestry roads and less-trafficked public roads, blending of natural scenery and safe cycling. The trail culminates near the Gangjin Celadon Museum, then loops back to the starting point. This course, nestled in the heart of Jeollanam Province’s southern landscapes, is perfect for those seeking a mix of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural exploration.
- Muju Jeoksang Mountain (무주 적상산; map): The Muju Jeoksang Mountain Trail in Muju is a moderate 30.1-kilometer, day-long course. It encompasses two circular routes on the northern slope of Jeoksang Mountain and one forest trail on the northwest slope of Cheongnyang Mountain. Cliffs and vibrant autumn foliage surround the trails. The top of Jeoksang Mountain features an upper dam and the Moroo Wine Cave, where visitors can sample and buy local Muroo grape wine.
- Suncheon Godong Mountain (순천 고동산; map): The Suncheon Godong Mountain biking trail climbs a 709-meter peak. Nestled behind the famed Naganeupseong Walled Town, Godong Mountain boasts well-maintained circular forest roads that wind up to a summit with panoramic views of nearby Jogye Mountain, Geumjeong Mountain, the South Sea. The trail weaves through dense cypress forests. Starting from Mokchon Village at the mountain’s base, the trail presents a mix of challenging climbs and thrilling descents. This trail is captivating in May when the rhododendrons bloom.
