Hamdeok Seoubong Beach
Hamdeok Seoubong Beach (함덕서우봉해변; map), often regarded as one of Jeju Island’s best beaches. Located about 20 kilometers from Jeju International Airport, the beach features three separate coves, each equipped with shallow waters, gentle waves, and sandy shores.
Known for its emerald waters, views of palm trees and nearby hillsides, and neighboring waterfront, which hosts countless restaurants (map) and cafes (map), many Jeju visitors frequent the beach because of its convenience and beauty.
Seoubong Peak, a modest hill standing beside the beach, provides panoramic views of the coastline, Halla Mountain, and Jeju’s eastern landscapes.
Features
Add Hamdeok’s three alcove beaches together and they stretch about 900 meters, offering plenty of space for visitors to swim, wade, or explore the coastline.
The beach’s soft white sands, composed of fine shell fragments, is great for sunbathing, games, or strolls. The beach’s shallow waters provide a safe environment for families with children and novice swimmers.
Beach Lawn Park & Floating Bridge
Hamdeok Seoubong Beach Lawn Park (해수욕장 잔디공원; map) is a broad grass park that sits between the beach’s alcoves. It features large sculptures, picnic areas, public exercise equipment, and seaside strolling paths.
The paths connect to the seaside promenade that leads to “Floating Bridge” on the beach’s western end. The bridge arches from a natural jetty over to two small coastal islands.
Cyclists on the Jeju Fantasy Bike Path can stamp their Bike Passports at the Hamdeok Seoubong Beach Certification Center (함덕서우봉해변 인증센터; map) located near the back of Hamdeok Seoubong Beach Lawn Park.
Seoubong Volcanic Cone
Rising 111 meters, Seoubong Volcanic Cone (서우봉; map) holds a gentle hiking trail and offers stunning views of Hamdeok Beach, Halla Mountain, and Jeju’s eastern coastline.
During spring, yellow canola flowers cover the hillside path, creating a striking contrast against the red volcanic soil and the blue sea.
During the Japanese occupation, tunnels were carved into its coastal cliffs as part of military installations, remnants of which remain visible today.
