Bukhangang Bike Path

Balgeun Gwangjang (밝은광장; map), also known as “Bright Square,” is a plaza and rest area located under the Bukhangang Railroad Bridge the southern endpoint of the Bukhangang Bike Path.

Located in Namyangju City (map), near Ungilsan Station (map), the plaza lies close to the intersection of the North Han and South Han Rivers, and marks the intersection of the Bukhangang Bike Path and the Hangang Bike Path, part of the Cross-Country Route.

Features and Amenities

The plaza keeps the Balgeun Gwangjang Certification Center (밝은광장 인증센터; map) where cyclists can stamp for their Bike Passports for the Bukhangang Bike Path.

  • Bicycle Parking: Ample bike racks provide a secure place for bicycles while riders rest.
  • Shaded Seating Areas: Covered benches offer relief from the sun and rain.
  • Basic Bike Repairs: Pop-up vendors offer spare parts and simple repairs.

Balgeun Gwangjang is located at the confluence of the North and South Han Rivers, also known as Yangpyeong Dumulmeori (map; aerial view), offering panoramic views of the water and surrounding greenery. Early mornings often bring mist over the river, while sunsets create a warm, scenic backdrop.

Bukhangang Railroad Bridge

The Bukhangang Railroad Bridge (map) spans the North Han River above Balgeun Gwangjang. Originally known as the Yangsu Railroad Bridge, it was completed in 1939 but sustained significant damage during the Korean War and was rebuilt several times.

In 2011, the bridge was repurposed for cyclists and pedestrians. Engineers reinforced its structure, removed the tracks, and added wooden slats, transforming it into a bike-friendly path. Now, Bukhangang Railroad Bridge is a popular spot for photography and has appeared in K-dramas and K-pop music videos, thanks to its distinctive trusses and scenic location.

Accessibility

You can access Balgeun Gwangjang by train, car, or bike.

  • By Train: The plaza is a 5-minute walk from Ungilsan Station (map) on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, making it convenient for cyclists traveling by rail.
  • By Car: Parking is available, but spaces fill up quickly on weekends and during peak cycling seasons. Arriving early is recommended.
