Saekhyeon Tunnel
Saekhyeon Tunnel (색현터널; map), also known as the “Moss Tunnel,” is a 423-meter-long passage located in Gapyeong County (가평군; map), Gyeonggi Province.
Constructed in 1939, it was originally part of the Gyeongchun Line railway, serving trains traveling between Seoul and Chuncheon City (map). After the railway’s rerouting in 2010, the tunnel was repurposed as a segment of the Bukhangang Bicycle Path, attracting cyclists and tourists alike.
The tunnel’s entrances are adorned with moss-covered retaining walls, leading to its affectionate nickname. Its distinctive round entrances and well-preserved structure make it a favored spot for photography enthusiasts.
Saekhyeon Tunnel is situated along the Bukhangang Bicycle Path, a route that has transformed Gapyeong into a hub for cyclists. The path offers scenic views of the Bukhan River and surrounding landscapes, making it a popular choice for both casual and seasoned cyclists.
Visitors can access the tunnel at any time, as it is open 24 hours a day. Parking facilities are available nearby for those traveling by car.
Getting There
Saekhyeon Tunnel is easily accessible from Café Flore (플로레; map), a flower-themed café located at the entrance of Eden Cherry Blossom Road.
The tunnel is a short 600-meter walk or bike ride along the path, taking about 5–10 minutes. The route includes a slight incline, so be prepared for a brief but manageable climb.
Exploring the Tunnel
Inside Saekhyeon Tunnel, visitors experience a refreshing drop in temperature, providing relief during hot summer days. The tunnel’s ambient lighting highlights its curved walls, creating excellent photography opportunities.
As the tunnel is part of the Bukhangang Bike Path, walkers should stay within designated walking areas and be mindful of passing cyclists.
