Highlights
The Seomjingang Bike Path follows the Seomjin River, one of Korea’s cleanest waterways, winding through the Honam region.
The 149 km route is considered one of the most scenic certification paths in Korea, offering a journey through valleys, mountain ridges, and landmarks. Along the way, riders can enjoy plum orchards, train villages, and natural wonders.
Let’s take a closer look at the highlights of the Seomjingang Bike Path.
Janggunmok, located in Sunchang County, is a famed rock formation shaped over thousands of years by the relentless flow of water in the upper reaches of the Seomjin River. Surrounded by Yonggwol Mountain and Muryang Mountain, the site is steeped in history and legends.
The name “Janggunmok,” meaning “General’s Neck.” It derives from the topography of the nearby Yonggwol Mountain and Muryang Mountain, which are said to resemble a “General’s Seated Posture” (장군대좌형) in Korean geomancy. This formation is thought to bring balance and prosperity to the region.
Hyangga Amusement Park, located in Sunchang County is a key stop on the Seomjingang Bike Path. Once a partially built section of a Japanese colonial railway, Korea has transformed the area into a park that features a repurposed railway bridge and tunnel, drawing visitors with unique attractions like the Sky Walk.
During the Japanese colonial period, the area was integral to an ambitious railway project intended to connect key agricultural regions in Jeolla Province with export hubs. The railway was designed to transport grain and other resources but was abandoned following Korea’s liberation in 1945.
Hwoingtang Pavilion sits on the banks of the Seomjin River in the quiet village of Noyon in Gokseong County. This traditional Korean pavilion is celebrated for its striking natural surroundings and historical lineage.
Hwoingtang Pavilion began as a gathering space. Its name, which translates to “Pavilion by the Rapids,” describes its location near the Seomjin River’s stronger currents.
