Baeal Island Waterfront Park
Baeal Island Waterside Park (배알도수변공원; map) lies at the confluence of the Seomjin River and South Sea (map). The bulk of the park sits on the northern tip of Taein Island (태인도; map), but also extends via two walking bridges to Baeal Island (배알도; map), a tiny islet that has been developed into a garden-like retreat.
The park is known for its scenic camping and clean shores which often retreat during low tides, leaving its muddy underbelly exposed for visitors to explore.
Baeal Island
Located where the Seomjin River meets the South Sea, the Baeal Island’s name translates to “bowing island” because it resembles a figure bowing toward Mangdeok Mountain (망덕산; map; Mangdeoksan).
Baeal Island has been transformed into a picturesque “garden island” that serves as a hub of leisure.
- Haemaji Bridge (해맞이다리; map): Translating to “Sunrise Bridge,” this curved walking bridge represents the “sunrise” as a metaphor for new beginnings. It connects Baeal Island with the south end of the park, offering panoramic views of the river and the South Sea, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
- Byeol Heneun Bridge (별헤는다리; map): Named after Yun Dong-ju’s iconic poem Counting the Stars at Night (별 헤는 밤) this northern bridge links Baeal Island with the mainland Mangdeokpo District. It also celebrates Yun Dong-ju’s legacy, with nearby landmarks also paying homage to his contributions to Korean literature.
The bridges symbolize new beginnings, connecting physical spaces but also serve as reminders of the region’s dual identity as a serene natural haven and a site of historical significance.
The Island Garden
Park officials cultivated Baeal Island into a tranquil garden that bursts with vibrant seasonal blooms such as hydrangeas, peonies, and lilies. These flowers create a colorful and inviting atmosphere year-round, drawing visitors for leisurely strolls and photo opportunities. The iconic red “Baeal Island” photo zone is a must-visit for tourists, particularly in the warmer months when the flowers reach their peak color.
Recreational Activities
Baeal Island and the surrounding park offer a range of activities for visitors of all ages:
- Cycling: The island marks the southern endpoint of the Seomjingang Bike Path, one of Korea’s most scenic cycling routes. Cyclists often use the park as a rest stop before or after their journey.
- Camping: While free camping is allowed in designated areas around the park, strict no-cooking policies are enforced to protect the environment. The waterfront views makes Baeal Island a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts.
- Walking and Exploration: Wooden decks and walking paths line the banks of the park, offering 360-degree views of the landscape, including the meeting point of the Seomjin River and the ocean.
Yun Dong-ju Memorial
The Yun Dong-ju Memorial (윤동주유고보존가옥; map), located just north of the park, played a pivotal role during the Japanese colonial period. It was within this home that poet Yun Dong-ju’s handwritten manuscript of Sky, Wind, Star, and Poetry (하늘과 바람과 별과 시) was hidden and preserved from Imperial Japan, which enacted a policy to destroy Korea’s treasured artifacts.
After Japan lost control over Korea following WWII, the surviving poem became a symbol of Korea’s fight for independence.
Visitors can walk through the historic residence, now a registered cultural heritage site, and see exhibits that celebrate Yun Dong-ju’s life and poetry. The surrounding Mangdeokpo Province area features installations inspired by his works, such as sculptures, poetry paths, and plaques displaying lines from his most famous pieces, like Counting the Stars at Night (별 헤는 밤).
The Birthplace of Seaweed Farming
Kimshikji (김시식지) is an historic site on Taein Island (태인도; map) where Kim Yeo-ik (김여익) was born and raised. Kim was a Joseon Dynasty farmer who first developed techniques to farm seaweed in the nearby estuaries of the Seomjin River estuaries in 1640.
The cultivation of seaweed has since become an integral part of Korean cuisine, found in a plethora of dishes including seaweed soup (미역국) and gimbap (김밥).
At Kim Yeo-ik’s shrine, visitors can explore information about his life and learn about its impact on local livelihoods and international trade. Every year on the 10th day of the 10th lunar month, residents hold a memorial service for Kim Yeo-ik.
Practical Information
The park is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring wheelchair-friendly pathways, ramps, and rest areas. Key amenities, such as restrooms, include facilities for visitors with mobility challenges.
For cyclists, the Baeal Island Waterfront Park Certification Center (배알도 수변공원 인증센터; map) lies near the eastern tip of the park, with a nearby kiosk where riders can buy or have their Bike Passports stamped (map)
Visitors will find several kiosks and vending machines placed throughout the park, offering snacks and cold beverages.
