Seomjin River Train Village
Seomjingang Train Village (섬진강기차마을; map), located in Gokseong County, is a railway-themed park that transforms the historic Gokseong Station and portions of the decommissioned Jeolla Line into a multifaceted attraction.
The park offers something for visitors of all ages. Central to its charm are the functioning steam locomotive rides, scenic rail bike experiences, and the sprawling rose garden, which showcases thousands of rose varieties.
History and Development
The historic Gokseong Station (곡성역; map), constructed in 1933, served as a key stop along the Jeolla Line for much of the 20th century. Designed with 1930s railway architecture, the station became an iconic feature of the region.
However, in 1999, the station was decommissioned as part of the Jeolla Line’s double-tracking project. Rail operations were moved to a new facility. Recognizing its cultural and architectural significance, the old station was designated as Registered Cultural Heritage No. 122.
In 2004, Gokseong County repurposed the station and its surrounding area into the Seomjingang Train Village. The project aimed to preserve the original station while creating a tourist destination.
The transformation included the introduction of interactive attractions such as the steam locomotive rides, which operate along a restored 10-kilometer stretch of the old track, and the rail bike experience, which repurposed additional sections of the disused railway.
Over the years, Seomjingang Train Village has expanded to include a rose garden, an amusement park, and thematic exhibits, blending history with recreation.
Key Attractions
Steam Locomotive Experience
A centerpiece of the Seomjingang Train Village is the steam locomotive, which operates on a 10-kilometer stretch between the village and Gajeong Station. While modernized with a diesel engine for practicality, the locomotive preserves the look of a traditional steam train, complete with authentic features like train whistles.
Passengers enjoy a leisurely journey along the Seomjin River, taking in scenic views of the countryside. Onboard, a conductor dressed in retro attire offers nostalgic snacks such as boiled eggs and traditional candies, recreating the railway experience of decades past. The train makes a brief stop at Gajeong Station, allowing visitors to explore the area and its iconic suspension bridge before the return trip.
Seomjingang Rail Bike
Spanning 3.6 kilometers, the rail bike lets visitors glide along tracks using pedal-power rail cars that wind through forested areas, scenic riversides, and tunnels. The route includes automated assistance for uphill sections, making it accessible for riders of all fitness levels. Designed for families and couples, the rail bike provides a unique vantage point to experience the Seomjin River.
Rose Garden
Seomjingang Train Village includes a 40,000-square-meter rose garden with over 1,000 species of roses. The annual Gokseong World Rose Festival, held in May, celebrates this vibrant display with live music, cultural performances, and themed rose exhibits. Visitors can wander through intricately designed sections representing different regions and eras, take photos at designated scenic spots, and enjoy the serene environment enhanced by ponds and gazebos.
Dreamland Amusement Park
This family-friendly park within the train village features classic rides like carousels and mini-trains and a towering ferris wheel that provides panoramic views of the surrounding area. Interactive zones, including 4D cinemas and a VR experience, add a modern twist.
Animal Farm
In the petting zoo within the village, children can interact with and feed animals such as rabbits, goats, deer, and even exotic birds like peacocks. For a small fee, feeding stations offer grains and greens, allowing hands-on engagement with the animals.
Heritage Walks and Exhibits
History enthusiasts will appreciate the village’s thoughtful recreation of 1960s Korea. Visitors can stroll through streets lined with reimagined vintage storefronts, explore historic rail cars, and view exhibits that showcase the evolution of Korea’s railway system.
The original Gokseong Station building, designated a Registered Cultural Heritage site, serves as a centerpiece, preserving the architectural style and ambiance of the mid-20th century.
Dining and Market Areas
The village also offers various dining options and market stalls featuring local delicacies. Specialty dishes, such as Gokseong’s famous chamgetang (spicy crab stew; 참게탕), are available at nearby restaurants, while street food stalls serve traditional snacks. On select days, visitors can shop for handicrafts, fresh produce, and regional souvenirs at the nearby Gokseong Market.
