Toad Bridge
Toad Bridge (두꺼비다리; map), or Duggeo Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge that spans the Seomjin River in Gurye County, South Jeolla Province.
Built in 2017, the bridge’s design and significance reflect both the area’s natural beauty and the rich folklore of the Seomjin River, a 212-kilometer waterway that meanders through the lower-middle of the Korean peninsula before it reaches the South Sea
History and Legend
The name “Toad Bridge” (두꺼비다리) comes from one of the region’s most famous tales. According to legend, in 1385 during the late Goryeo Dynasty (918 ~ 1392), invading Japanese forces attempted to cross the Seomjin River. But as they advanced, something extraordinary happened: thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) toads gathered on the riverbanks, filling the air with their deafening croaks. Startled and overwhelmed by the sudden cacophony, the invaders retreated south to the Gwangyang coast.
This event was so significant that the locals began calling the river “Seomgang,” which translates to “Toad River.”
Toads in Korean folklore carry a wide range of meanings. They are often considered protectors and harbingers of good fortune. At either end of Toad Bridge and under its structure, you’ll find sculptures of toads that commemorate the legend and help bring good luck to the region.
Design
Toad Bridge is a thoughtfully designed structure that incorporates elements of local history, folklore, and natural beauty.
One of the standout features of the bridge is its transparent, non-slip tempered glass walkway. Spanning a section of the bridge, this skywalk allows visitors to look directly down at the Seomjin River below.
Positioned near the bridge and along its base, the large toad sculptures pay homage to legend of the Seomjin River, with each statue embodying protection and prosperity acting as sentinels that watch over the river and its travelers.
The bridge also features observation decks that offer uninterrupted views of the Seomjin River, the surrounding valleys, and the forested hills that frame the scene.
Whether visitors come during the cherry blossom season, when the riverbanks are blanketed in soft pink blooms, or in autumn, when vibrant foliage reflects off the water.
Springtime
One of the most anticipated sights each year is the cherry blossom pathway near to the bridge. In late March to early April, cherry trees bloom along the riverside, creating a delicate canopy of pink and white flowers.
Adding to the seasonal color, golden-yellow forsythia bushes also come alive near the bridge during early spring. These vibrant flowers provide a warm contrast to the pastel tones of the cherry blossoms. The forsythia blooms along sections of the bridge’s approach and nearby walking paths.
