Juksan Weir

Yeongsangang Bike Path

Juksan Weir (죽산보; map; Juksanbo) stretches across the Yeongsan River in Naju City. Constructed in 2011 as part of the Four Rivers Restoration Project, it was designed to regulate the river’s water flow, create renewable energy, and connect habitats, while simultaneously catering to cyclists, families, and outdoor enthusiasts.

The structure’s design takes inspiration from the natural curves of the river, reflected in its observation deck’s flowing architecture. It’s also celebrated as one of the Yeongsan River’s “Eight Scenic Spots” (Yeongsangang Palgyeong), with its designation as “Juksan Spring Dawn” (죽산춘효), encapsulating the beauty of the area during the early hours of spring, where the morning light illuminates the surrounding riverbanks and fields.

Design and Features

Juksan Weir is a multifaceted structure that integrates engineering with ecological preservation. Let’s take a look at some of its key features.

  • Hydrological Structures: The 172-meter weir helps manage the water levels on this section of the Yeongsan River. Its 662-meter bridge spans the river and connects both banks, providing scenic vistas and transit for cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Hydropower Generation: The weir includes a 1,220-kilowatt hydroelectric plant featuring two 610 kW turbines. This facility generates 569,000 kWh annually, contributing to renewable energy initiatives in the region.
  • Ecological Connectivity: A 104-meter fishway built into the weir enables aquatic species to navigate the structure safely, ensuring the migration patterns of native fish are maintained.
  • Observation Points: The observation decks above the water gates are designed with curved lines, mimicking the river’s natural meanders. These platforms offer visitors panoramic views of the Yeongsan River and its surroundings.

Cycling, Management Center, and Recreation

Juksan Weir is a vital waypoint on the Yeongsangang Bicycle Path. The Juksanbo Certification Center (죽산보 인증센터; map) sits on on the south side of the river near the Juksan Weir Management Center (map). Cyclists can stamp their Bike Passports in the red booth.

Inside the management center, cyclists can have their bike passports certified during normal business hours from 9 AM to 6 PM (closed on Mondays and daily from 12 to 1 PM for lunch).

The management center provides educational displays about the weir’s design, purpose, and impact. A well maintained riverside park sits near the weir. Green spaces, walking paths, and picnic areas along the riverbank provide opportunities for leisure and relaxation.

Also near to the weir, the Juksanbo Auto Camping Site (map) features 41 camping lots, water play facilities, and shaded picnic spots. This site caters to families and outdoor adventurers, offering a base for exploring the surrounding areas.
