Nodeul Island

Hangang Bike Path
Discover a river island in the heart of Seoul.

Nodeul Island (노들섬; map) sits in the middle of the Han River in the heart of Seoul, between the Dongjak and Yongsan Districts.

The Beach

Nature didn’t create Nodeul Island. Until the 20th century, it was a soft, white beach extending from the north banks of the Han River. Seoulites once ice skated here in the winter and swam in the summer.

In 1917, engineers completed construction on the first Hangang Bridge (footbridge). To support its 1 kilometer length, workers drove a central pillar into the middle of the sandy beach and laid stone and earthen reinforcements.

In the ‘60s, the Han River Development Plan, which sought to tame the tempestuous river, dredged the beach and used its sand to expand the Han’s northern banks.

The beach didn’t disappear. Anchored by the patch of ground around Hangang Bridge’s central pillar, Nodeul Island appeared.

In 1969, a tourism company bought Nodeul, poured a concrete foundation, then packed it with dirt, expanding the island from 33,000 to 150,000 square meters.

Hellgate

In 2005, Seoul bought the island. Their intent? Build a Sydney-style opera house in the center of Seoul, with panoramic views of the city’s old north and new south.

The problem? Three.

  1. Remember, Nodeul Island was originally just a sandy beach. It would require some expensive engineering to construct a ginormous, world-class opera house.
  2. Seoul was ₩25 trillion ($25 billion) in debt.
  3. The Hangang Bridge was already a nightmare for commuters. Adding a flagship cultural landmark to the island with one-way on, one-way off, and limited parking would open a “traffic hellgate” (헬게이트).

When Seoul changed mayors, the opera house plans halted despite preliminary construction. Instead, in 2012, the city threw up a few tennis courts, communal farms, and an apiary.

Global Art Island

In 2015, Seoul held a design competition to once again try to develop Nodeul’s prime bit of real estate. The winning bid transformed the river isle into a “Global Art Island.”

Now Nodeul hosts a complex of buildings bisected by the Hangang Bridge.

  • The west side sports buildings centered on a double-stacked courtyard.
  • The east end keeps a protected forest.
  • And a walking path loops around the island.

Let’s look at some notable facilities (map).

Nodeul’s main attraction isn’t its facilities, however. Stroll around its perimeter and you can get a sweeping view of Seoul, including Yeouido Island’s high-rise skyline from the island’s west end.

Because of its scenic backdrop, music videos, K-Dramas, and other media shot on Nodeul.

Future Nodeul

Seoul hasn’t finished developing Nodeul. Beginning in 2023, the city held another design competition to once again transform the centrally located island by the end of the 2020s (concept video 1, video 2, video 3).
